Broken Handlebars

 Back
Yes, these are the handlebars that I so carefully and meticulously installed and described.  About a year later, the steering felt real funny on the Interstate.  Stable, but loose feeling.  When I got home, I found that the bars had cracked and split into two pieces, held in place by the two separate risers.

This is what will happen if you don't use the recommended single top piece clamp.

A single-piece top clamp wasn't available for an Ultra (with a radio) when I first installed my bars.  But since then, a new top piece was produced and marketed by Harley Davidson, P/N 55917-08.   I strongly recommend it.  It is pictured below.  It is heavy steel and made to hold the bars securely and inhibit any differential movement between the sides.  The top is rounded and bolts recessed to fit under the radio.
