Main Bearing InstallationPrevious | Home | NextWell, what you don't see here is probably more important than what you do see. That is, the installation of the main bearing. It was easy! I used a large piece of PVC tubing that was about the same size as the bearing OUTER race, a long bolt, a couple of very large washers, and a nut. All of the pressing stress was put on the inside of the transmission case and the outer race of the bearing. One must be careful not to put any side loads on the bearing inner race to press it into the case. Then, the monster C-clip was installed using my slightly-modified Pep boys 12" needle nose pliers. Note the orientation of the big C-clip. The manual states that the C-clip bevel should be facing OUT. I compared the wear marks of the old clip; the old one was installed the same way. After the bearing and C-clip, the
mainshaft seal goes in using the same contraption that I used for the
bearing. |
