New Primary BearingPrevious | Home | NextRemember how hard it was to remove the primary inner race? That's because the Harley Davidson primary bearing (located in the inner primary case) is a two-piece bearing. The outer race with rollers is pressed into the primary case. The inner race is pressed onto the transmission input shaft. When the inner case is set and bolted in place on the transmission and engine crankcase, the shaft and inner race find their home in the bearing body. But the inner race can move around on the shaft making it necessary to cut it off. So it was recommended to me to replace that two-piece bearing with the Baker High Torque one-piece bearing. The entire bearing with captive inner race is pressed into the primary case. Then, when the case is positioned and bolted onto the engine and transmission, the shaft slips into the captive inner race. This appears to be a huge design improvement. So, I bought the $40 Baker bearing with seal package. This picture is the installation of
the Baker inner primary bearing into the case. Notice that all
pressure is being applied to the outer race so that the bearing isn't
damaged. |
